What do people think of nautical star tattoos?

A: I think you should get what you want, and don't worry about being original. It's going to be a part of you forever, so make it something you want. If the nautical star has meaning for you, then get it. I have a four leaf clover, which i know is way less than original, but it means a lot to me, so i don't care if other people have similar tats. Go for it!!

A: Nautical stars as tattoos were originally used by sailors symbolizing the ability to find one's way home. In more recent times the nautical star has been used by homosexuals to indicate sexual preference. Some lesbians will get a small nautical star on the top of their wrist. In Ireland the nautical star tattoo is used as a symbol of good health. The nautical star was popularized again by the punk movement and is now making a comeback with the emo scene. EDIT As for the shape of the star being why sailors chose this design. It represented the north star that they used to travel by and also the star that can be found on a compass.

Why do I see so many people with nautical star tattoos?

A: Lol. I actually have 2 nautical stars, but i got them before it was "cool," and i have liked the way they looked ever since I was a kid. I think it is because most people just want a "cool" tattoo, so they pick a piece of flash (htose posters on the walls). Stars DO look pretty neat, and everybody knows what they are, so they just get them. I think a lot of these tattoos are spur-of-the-moment things.

A: No one here can tell you how much this tattoo is going to cost. There are a number of factors that go into deciding the price for a tattoo: the size of the tattoo, the amount of work that's put into the drawing & tattoo, the amount of time it's going to take, & mostly the location of the shop (a lot of people say that it depends on the colors used, but in my experience/where I'm from the colors have nothing to do with it - it all depends on how long it's going to take to complete, how complicated it is, etc). Most shops charge by the hour; if it's something that takes less than an hour (only a tattoo artist can tell you this) then they usually charge at least a shop minimum which can also vary widely. Again, asking random strangers will get you a wide range of prices - it's best to go into several local tattoo shops and ask around. But don't go to the place that'll do it the cheapest - great tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos are rarely great.
